The wright man on the job
Meet malik wright, a.k.a. “lead m. Wright”, a highly ambitous, youth-based leader in our community. As a wilmington native, he spends most of his hours throughout the week mentoring & teaching kids better ways to be productive members of society. his daily schedule is a constant back & forth between schools & community centers throughout the city acting as a light for younger generations who need a role model. Each year he finds special ways to give back to his beloved hometown by putting on different types of events/giveaways. it might be bookbags, schools supplies, or whatever else parents & guardians might be showing interest in that season. this year for the 4th “Lead m. Wright” giveaway to date, it’s free haircuts. on june 15th, 2024, Lead M. decided to gather 5 of some of the best young local barbers in the city to host the current summer giveaway. Barbers by instagram name: @qchoppedit, @iamsturdycutz, @ikonic_cutz, @kbkutz, and @kutzbyrp3. In addition, the giveaway will include hygiene kits, summer toys, sports equipment, & moon bounces, water ice, & more. there has always been places for students to get certain resources such as boys & girls clubs, ymca’s, & the pal, but not too often do we see individuals from the community taking it upon themselves to build something meaningful from the ground up without any major institutional resources. Not only has wright taken the steps to ensure the experience for the kids is memorable & worthwhile, but he has partnered with local business owners to promote their businesses as well, which also strengthens the community. vendors & collaborators include Gracious taste (@jsgracioustaste), the life health center, & nemours children health, as well as a handful of local photographers to help capture the moment.
Speaking with wright, gives a clear insight as to where his passion lies & why he does what he does. COnstantly trying to come up with new, fun ways to show love to his community, Wright has built up a decent number of supporters that have been following him since day 1. this ofcourse is no coincdence. each day leading up to these giveaways, wright & his team are out on the ground level going door to door to actually speak with people in the community. engaging with the extremely diverse population we have in northern delaware is no easy task, often times people can be rude or simply don’t have time to talk. surely they don’t realize that this man knocking on the door isn’t trying to sell solar panels but in fact is looking to provide benefits & opportunities to people who need it. that is why, no matter how many households he gets turned down from, Malik pushes forward day after day to get the word out. on top of engaging with the community going door-to-door, Malik has set up meetings with educators, potential sponsors, heads of organizations, & other leaders who can make a difference to pitch his proposal for building an infrastructure that makes these giveaways be able to occur more frequently. if that wasn’t enough, Malik’s social media presence leading up to these events might make you question where does he find the time. Working tirelessly to get the word out, Malik wants to ensure that as many families as possible hear about the event & are able to take advantage of the resource. With inflation rates at record high’s & income wages barely being able to provide for a 2 person household, let alone an entire family; these resources could be something that really tips the scales in favor of a lot of families & might even offset some costs so that members of our community can survive & thrive.
